FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

US NAVY ANCHOR & CHAIN RECOVERED

Thursday, August 22, 2002 -- Washington, DC -- Phoenix International, Inc., (Phoenix) announced the successful completion of a mission to locate and salvage a ship’s anchor and chain from 131 ft. in the Red Sea.

Phoenix search and recovery personnel were mobilized July 1 to locate and salvage a 45-ton anchor and 14 shots (1,260 ft.) of chain lost from USS WHIDBEY ISLAND (LSD-41) in the deep draught anchorage south of Port Suez in the Red Sea.  The search was conducted aboard the M/T FLYING ENTERPRISE, a 167 ft. vessel owned by EDT Towage & Salvage of Limassol, Cyprus.  The Phoenix search and Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) team deployed a MagScan search unit consisting of a Marine Sonics 600 kHz shallow water side scan sonar and an integrated Geometrics 881 magnetometer to locate the anchor and chain.  As both proved to be buried in the mud seafloor, the magnetometer provided the crucial data needed to locate the anchor and chain.  Under the operations oversight of Phoenix, the EDT boat crew proceeded to conduct grapnel runs to snag the anchor chain.  After several runs, the chain was hooked.  Phoenix  provided confirmation of the fact by deploying the U.S. Navy owned inspection ROV, Video Ray.  Recovery of the anchor and 60,000 lbs. of chain was completed on July 7.

The US Navy, through the Naval Sea Systems Command‘s Office of the Supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV) developed and maintains a national capability to search, locate, and recover objects of interest lost in water depths to 20,000 feet.  In addition to meeting the Navy’s search and recovery needs, SUPSALV offers its assistance in support of accident investigations by the Army, Coast Guard, Air Force, NASA, FAA, and NTSB, as well as to foreign governments and agencies requesting its expertise.

Phoenix provides high quality manned and unmanned marine services to an international customer base from its facilities in Landover, MD and Morgan City, LA.   Phoenix is the SUPSALV prime contractor responsible for maintaining, modifying, upgrading, and operating Navy owned sonar, ROV, and heavy lift equipment used to conduct worldwide underwater search and recovery operations.
