PHOENIX XBOT COLLECTS UNPRECEDENTED VIDEO WITHIN RMS TITANIC

Wednesday, July 27, 2005 -- Washington, DC -- Phoenix International, Inc., (Phoenix), announced that its Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) xBots have conducted the deepest penetrations of RMS TITANIC to date.  Unprecedented, high-resolution video was captured in TITANIC’s Turkish Baths and in White Star Line owner Joseph Bruce Ismay’s elaborate suite.  These areas lie deep within the wreck and have not been seen since the sinking.  The video was aired on the Discovery Channel July 24th during noted filmmaker James Cameron’s live special, Last Mysteries of the TITANIC.

Phoenix was contracted to provide four xBots to meet the especially difficult challenges associated with the planned extensive internal investigation of TITANIC, which rests in extremely deep water (3,875 meters).  For this project, xBots were mounted on and piloted from two MIR manned submersibles owned by the Russian Shirshov Institute of Oceanology.  The versatile caged xBots are also capable of operating independent of any host system.

xBots are the smallest (61cm x 33cm x 28cm), deepest diving (7,000+ meters) ROVs of their kind with a mission duration of up to 12 hours.  Weighing only 33 kgs (excluding droppable ballast), the expendable, highly maneuverable, easy to operate systems are optimized for video inspections, and are specifically designed by Phoenix to undertake operations in hazardous environments and highly confined spaces.  The low cost of an xBot makes it a very attractive asset for conducting high-risk missions such as wreck penetration.

Phoenix research and development efforts in pressure tolerant electronics, high energy density batteries, and a company proprietary battery management system are three key technologies enabling the xBot design and making possible the long duration, deep penetration operations demonstrated on the project.

Phoenix is a marine services company providing quality manned and unmanned underwater services to an international customer base.  Worldwide operations include Underwater Ship Inspection & Repair, US Navy & ABS Certified Underwater Welding, ROV Services, Deep Ocean Search & Recovery, Subsea Construction Support, Submarine Rescue, and Engineering Design.  Phoenix resources include divers and diving systems, Remotely Operated Vehicles, underwater tools and sensors, and one-Atmosphere Diving Suits (ADS).
