HOLLYWOOD CALLS UPON PHOENIX TO BUILD UNDERWATER ROVThursday, May 8, 2003 -- Washington, DC -- Phoenix International, Inc., (Phoenix), announced its participation in the development and operation of a unique underwater lighting platform for internationally known film-maker, James Cameron. The remotely operated platform, called Medusa, was quietly designed, developed, and delivered in 55 days after contract award in response to the project’s fast reaction requirements. The 6000 meter depth capable Medusa is a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) that carries 10 high powered, independently movable and controllable, HMI lights. Medusa can produce a total of 12,000 watts of illumination, an amount never before delivered to such great ocean depths. Mr. Cameron conceived the idea for the light source and called upon Phoenix to make it a reality. The mobile Medusa traveled to the decks of TITANIC for the making of Cameron’s Ghosts of the Abyss, a 3-D IMAX film made for Walden Media and distributed nationally by Disney Pictures. Medusa lit unprecedented expanses of TITANIC giving the viewer a better appreciation for the scale of the huge ship while creating an eerie atmosphere for the multiple manned and unmanned vehicles filmed moving along its decks. Filming was conducted during the Summer of 2001. With the release of the film this Spring, Phoenix was permitted to announce its participation in the project which included the at-sea operation of Medusa. Ghosts of the Abyss, which is currently breaking box office records, featured a number of state-of-the-art underwater technologies to include a 3-D underwater camera system, a pair of battery powered miniature ROVs, two Russian MIR manned submersibles, and Medusa. Phoenix provides high quality manned and unmanned marine services to an international military and commercial customer base from facilities in Landover, MD and Morgan City, LA. Services include manned diving, one-atmospheric diving systems, ROVs, and design engineering. The company has played key operations and engineering roles in projects involving the recovery of the USS MONITOR gun turret and the underwater search for Shuttle Columbia debris.
