PHOENIX TO BUILD SCIENCE ROV

FOR NOAA

Tuesday, October 11, 2005 -- Washington, DC -- Phoenix International, Inc., (Phoenix) was awarded a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) contract to design and build a new scientific Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) for NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration.  The system will operate to 6,000 meters of seawater (msw) and have the ability to inspect and interact with the seafloor and mid-water environments.  The two-body design, comprised of an instrumented “tow sled” and a 40 horsepower vehicle, will permit intervention tasks on both horizontal (seafloor) and vertical (shelf walls) surfaces.  The ROV will incorporate state-of-the-art sensors and imaging systems, and support a wide range of scientific payloads and tooling systems.

The ROV system is scheduled for installation on a 224 ft. NOAA ship, the former USNS CAPABLE (T-AGOS 16), soon to be re-fitted and dedicated to exploring unknown or little known ocean areas around the globe.
