For Immediate Release – December 10, 2018:

Phoenix International (Phoenix), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Quaesta Instruments, and Sexton Corporation received two joint R&D awards for their Lighthouse Directional Radiation Detectors.  The awards were presented at the 56th annual R&D Awards gala hosted by Advantage Business Marketing at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando on November 19th.

Winners of an international competition recognizing the 100 most exceptional innovations in science and technology were selected by an independent panel of more than 50 judges, representing R&D leaders in a variety of fields.  Phoenix, LANL, Quaesta and Sexton were recipients of the following awards: One of the 100 Most Technologically Significant New Products of the Year in Analytical/Test & the 2018 Merit Award: R&D 100 Special Recognition Market Disruptor-Products.

The Lighthouse Directional Radiation Detectors, patented by Los Alamos National Laboratory and commercialized by industrial partner Quaesta Instruments use a sweeping beam to precisely determine the direction, location, amount, and movement of a radioactive source.  Their design flexibility supports numerous applications including security, emergency response, hazardous-material accountability, basic geological research, and environmental stewardship.

In partnership with Phoenix International, LANL is currently developing Lighthouse Detector sensor systems to survey radioactive materials on the ocean floor.  These systems have been demonstrated for operations to depths of 7000 meters, sufficient to reach 99% of the ocean floor.

Commenting on the awards, Phoenix Engineering Manager Daniel Pol stated, “Our Phoenix Engineering staff is pleased to be a part of this exciting and innovative technology that ultimately leads to decreased safety risks associated with radioactive materials and an improved underwater environment.”  He continued, “We are honored to work with LANL and their industrial partners and thank them for providing us with the opportunity to lend our expertise as a worldwide provider of underwater solutions.”
